Start & Finish Tips

Start Line:

Get to the race early! Plan on arriving at least 45 minutes before the race starts.

Dress warmly, but don't overdress if it's chilly. Dress in layers which you can peel off and either tie around your waist or leave at a water station. Old shirts or sweatshirts are good for starting the race in as they can be discarded early. Discarded clothing left at the water stations will be collected by race volunteers, delivered to the stage area and if not picked up, donated to a local charity. We cannot guarantee that all discarded clothing will be retrieved.

Please practice common race courtesy. Line up in the appropriate placement in line, based on your expected finish time. In other words, if you know you are going to walk the 5K race, please do not line up in the front running area as this will make if difficult for others to pass you. If you are running / walking with a group, please do not run more than two abreast in the early stages of the race as, again, this makes it difficult for faster participants to pass.

Please thank a volunteer anytime you see one before, during or after the race. This event would not be possible without them!

Finish Line:

Keep moving as soon as you cross the finish line. Volunteers will be waiting to direct you to the finish area and provide you with water and whatever post-race assistance you need. Continuing to walk through the finish area not only prevents that area from getting backed up, but will aid in short term recovery. Continuing to move for 10 minutes or so after an endurance event will maintain your circulation, keeping the blood pumping through the muscles.

Start sipping on fluids as soon as they are available, especially if you have been sweating profusely.

Once you leave the finish area, meet family and friends, and relax. Get off your feet as soon as you can, and if possible elevate your legs to aid in recovery. Keep sipping fluids!

As soon as your appetite begins to return, start eating! You want to replenish depleted stores as soon as you can - 30 minutes after exercising is the optimum window for maximum absorption. Enjoy the food and drinks supplied by our Event Sponsors!

Awards

Medal awards for the SOS 5K Run / Walk will be given to top 3 male and female winners in both the High School and Adult divisions.  The top male and female finisher in the Youth division will receive a certificate.   Best Costume award for a sports team will also be presented.

Special Prizes

Any registered participants who submit the largest amount of sponsorships will receive an APPLE iPAD, iTOUCH, Flip Camera and iREADER, in this order.  In the event of a tie, winners will be entered into a random drawing and only one winner will be selected for each prize offered.  Need not be present to win.

Volunteer Verification/ Race Participation Credit

For those students that require volunteer verification, please see Patty Carrillo in the staging area AFTER the race has ended.  For those that require race participation credit, your racing bib will suffice for proper verification that you participated in the event.
